Yannis Skarpelos



Yannis Skarpelos, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Visual Culture Studies, at the Department of Communication, Media, and Culture, Panteion University. He has published the books Terra Virtualis: The Construction of Cyberspace (1999), Historical Memory and Greekness in Comics Books (2000), and Image and Society: From Social Photography to Visual Sociology (2012), in Greek. Since 2010 he is working on big visual data projects, and is writing a book on the sociological and semiotic analysis of the 40,000 covers of Greek music album covers since 1950, with the use of big visual data techniques. He is member of the board of International Visual Sociology Association and has been member of the editorial board of the journal Visual Studies.
