The Affective Tipping Point in Political Scandals: Explanations from Political Psychology on the Conditional Effects of Scandals

Christian von Sikorski contributes to our understanding of cultures of scandals on a micro-level by analyzing psychological conditions in political scandals. Based on the motivational reasoning perspective and empirical studies he argues that positive attitudes of recipients towards politicians may be strengthened during a scandal. Von Sikorski’s research shows that strong political attitudes are important variables in the evaluation process of citizens. Von Sikorski therefore advocates for a stronger focus on such variables in empirical research.
